Type: Cards
Like many of the card games played in casinos across the world, blackjack is thought to have its origins in France - the roots of the game can are alleged to be the popular 17th century game known as "vingt-et-un", literally "21". The game has become popular in casinos primarily because it is not simply a game of chance, there is an element of skill involved at the same time and the fact that it is very flexible. The name of the game originates with a special bonus which was paid when a hand consisting of the ace of spades and one of the black jacks was dealt, paying out at a rate of 10 to 1. Although the bonus is no longer part of the game, the name remains.
A game of blackjack consists of a dealer and between 1 and 4 players, the dealer is however also an active participant in the game. Each participant is dealt two cards, the object of the game at its most basic is for a player to get closer to 21 points than the dealer, without going bust - having more than 21. After the initial hand is dealt, players can choose to receive extra cards in order to try and get closer to 21 points, this is commonly known a being "hit", once a player is happy with his hand that player will choose to "stand" or take no further cards, in most casinos though a player can only stand if they have a minimum of 17.
If there are multiple players in the game, it is possible that the dealer can lose to one of the players but still beat the others in any given round, due to the fact that each player is competing only against the dealer and not against any other player. However, should the dealer go bust any remaining players are winners and are paid at a rate of 1:1.
Before each round begins each player makes their first set of bets, the minimum stake is shown at each blackjack table, after which the dealer deals the cards. Usually the cards are dealt from a special container with at least four packs of cards in it, the containers is known as a "shoe", alternatively the dealer can deal from two hand held packs.
In the event that a player's first two cards are worth 21 that player is deemed to be a winner without the need for any further cards being taken. For those players with less than 21, they are several options to choose from; most commonly it is a case of either taking a hit or standing. However, there are other choices available, including the "double down" whereby the player doubles his bet and receives just one more card before standing. If a player has two cards of the same value he can "split" his cards and create two individual hands.
